Cats in trees
Apr. 7th, 2010 03:34 pmRoommate AY's indoor cat recently had a few unsanctioned nights out on the town, but has now been brought home safely, and is doing some intensive sleeping on one of the livingroom chairs. While we were trying to track him down, there was a bit of discussion as to whether he might be found stuck in a tree somewhere. He wasn't, but the conversation revealed some controversy about whether cats can climb *down* from trees or not, and if so how.
I was pretty sure that I'd seen it done, but couldn't remember how the logistics worked. Roommate AP raised doubts as to whether I'd really seen what I'd claimed.
So naturally, I did a youtube search for cats climbing down trees.
At some cats seem pretty good at climbing down tail-first:

while others seem to prefer going down sideways, albeit somewhat awkwardly:

and still others prefer to jump from moderately questionable heights (as per roommate GY's primary hypothesis for why you never find cat skeletons in trees):

I think that backing down is what I'd seen before, though I'm sure AP will remain skeptical.
